I found a great study that might help MOTIVATE you and get Through To You guys who are “Thinking About It”.

Here’s an excerpt:

According to a recent study, obese patients who lost weight by eating less and exercising more also improved their cardiovascular health. 

The results showed weight loss led to improvement in four key measures of heart and vascular health. 

The improvements seen in the study participants included decreased thickness of heart muscle, improved pumping and relaxation functions of the heart and decreased thickness of the carotid artery walls. 

Maximum cardiovascular benefit lagged behind weight loss, with the greatest improvement coming 6-12 months after the study began.  Journal of the American College of Cardiology, Dec 2009

My Take:  Our poor heart has to push through all that extra volume of tissue and mass when you’re obese.  Not to mention the joints that have to hold the weight and work with “gravity” constantly.  When you have chronic pain… it’s a “warning sign” of a bigger problem coming down the road.

Nutritional Deficiencies Assocated with Depression

220px-BlooddrawI’ve been treating chronic pain and Fibromyalgia for the past 17 years here at South Forsyth Chiropractic in the Alpharetta-Cumming area.  Depression is often noted on consultation with those suffering from chronic pain.  Other than taking antidepressant drugs, there is quite a few alternatives.

Here’s a very comprehensive case study of a 29 year old women suffering from depression.  This case study was discovered in the book, Alternative Medicine Guide to chronic Fatigue & Fibromyalgia, Burton Goldberg, 1998. 

Take a look at what this doctor found through blood work.

Nutritional biochemist Patricia Kan, Ph.D., of Millville, New Jersey, has observed distinct nutritional deficiencies among patients diagnosed with depression. 

Dr. Kane cites the case of Sylvia, 29, who had suffered a prolonged depression lasting for three years.  Initially, she had complained of chronic fatigue and mood swings; later, she reported digestive difficulties and food allergies, and although she had avoided conventional drugs, she was on the verge of taking a well-known antidepressant drug.

A comprehensive blood test revealed the nutritional, or biochemical, side of Sylvia’s depression.  It showed she was either deficient or in excess of 31 substances, indicating  “a deeply imbalanced biochemistry,” says Dr. Kane.

“Most generally stated, Sylvia’s blood status was an 80% match with the know “disease pattern” for depression.  Further, Sylvia’s blood nutrient status deviated by 31% from the healthy norm.” 

For the most part, Sylvia was 10% deficient in many key nutrients.  Basically, owing to her dietary choices (low in natural fat, high in synthetic fats, or trans-fatty acids), Sylvia didn’t have enough of the essential raw materials for her body to produce the hormones, proteins, and other substances necessary for a healthy physiology, Dr. Kane explains.

“Most often, a depressed person will have lower than average amounts of five substances, namely blood urea nitrogen, chloride, cholesterol, potassium, and uric acid.” 

Sylvia’s pattern matched four out of five of these criteria: her blood urea nitrogen (nitrogen in urea form in the urine) was 33%; cholesterol 80%; potassium 33%; and uric acid (a crystalline acid from nitrogen metabolism) 64%; her chloride was high at 57% above the norm. 

Usually, high chlorides are correlated with epilepsy or high anxiety, while low chlorides are often found with depression. 

Three other markers consistently associated with depression were also low in Sylvia’s blood chemistry, specifically, iron, creatinine, and albumin, says Dr. Kane.  

My Take:  If you suffer from depression, print this study and show it to your primary medical physician. Ask them if they can run a simular blood chemistry test on you.

Lift Depression Without Drugs… Try These Natural Ways

Health47I’ve been treating chronic pain and Fibromyalgia for the past 17 years here at South Forsyth Chiropractic in the Alpharetta-Cumming area.  A lot of my patients take anti-depressant drugs to help them cope with depression.  Many believe that taking drugs is the only option… but there are natural remedies that can also help depression without the dangerous side-effects associated with drugs.

I found a great article from Michael T. Murray, N.D., that outlines specific natural (non-drug) remedies that really work for depression.

Here’s an excerpt:

An estimated 12 million people worldwide (six million Amerians) take name brand ”antidepressant drugs” for depression, resulting in annual sales of billions and billions. (With a B).

Why further enrich these drug companies when safer, inexpensive alternatives exist to successfully elevate your mood? 

According to naturopathic physician and educator Michael T. Murray, N.D., lifestyle, dietary, and psychological therapies can serve as natural antidepressants and keep you drug-free.

*Lifestyle–First, make sure your depression does not have an organic, physiological cause, such as diabetes, cancer, or heavy metal toxicity, or is not due to a food allergy or overuse of prescription drugs.  Then know that it is highly beneficial to create a mental attitude that is positive and optimistic, says Dr. Murray.  Set achievement goals, practice affirmation.  Quit smoking, reduce or eliminate your intake of caffeine and alcohol, exercise regularly, practice a relaxation and stress reduction exercise every day for at least ten minutes, and laugh more. 

*Dietary–Nutrient imbalances or deficiencies can contribute to chronic depression, says Dr. Murray.  “Correcting an underlying nutritional deficiency can restore normal mental function and relieve depression,” he adds.  Among Dr. Murray’s recommendations: reduce your fat intake; eat at least five daily servings of fresh fruits and vegetables; minimize your consumption of refines sugars and salt; eat much more fiber and complex carbohydrates (whole grains);  and keep your protein intake moderate.

*Supplements–Start correcting the nutritional foundation of your health with a daily high-potency multiple vitamin and mineral formula, says Dr. Murray.  In addition, he suggests taking daily folic acid (800 mcg), vitamin B12 (800 mcg), vitamin B6 (50-100 mg), and flaxseed oil.

*Herbs–As an additional antidepressant support, Dr. Murray recommends using Ginkgo biloba.  For people over 50, take 80 mg, three times daily, with addition folic acid (1,200 mcg).  For people under 50, take St. John’s Wort extract, 300 mg, three times daily.

*Amino Acids–Deficiencies or imbalances in the body’s levels of amino acids, which are essential protein building blocks, can also contribute to depression.  Dr. Murray suggest 2,000 mg of D-orL-phenylalanine, or 1,000 mg of L-tyrosine, taken once daily, before breakfast. 

*Insomnia-Depression often brings a disruption of normal sleeping rhythms.  Helpful here are melatonin (3 mg) before bedtime; valerian herbal extract (150-300 mg) taken 30 minutes before bedtime; or GABA (gamma aminobutyric acid, an amino acid derivative), taken at 200-400 mg, 30 minutes before bedtime.

“Adopting these guidelines is all that the majority or people with depression will need to do to elevate their mood,” says Dr. Murray.

My Take:  Exercising 15-30 minutes a day… alone does wonders for me.  And if you introduce some of these amino acids, vitamins and food that Dr. Murray recommends… you might really achieve your goals!

These Herbal Remedies Treat Inflammation and Help Fibromyalgia

I found a great article from the book Alternative Medicine Guide to Chronic Fatigue & Fibromyalgia, burton Goldberg, 1998, that gives an exact herbal formula that might help reduce inflammation and pain.

Here’s an excerpt:

According to Chanchal Cabrera, M.N.I.M.H., a clinical herbalist practicing in Vancouver, British Columbia, the following formula treats the symptoms of inflammation and helps ease the pain associated with fibromyalgia, while boosting the immune system. 

The blend (equal parts of each herb) should be taken three times a day, 1 tsp each time.  However, before beginning any herbal protocol, Cabrera urges you to consult a qualified herbalist, as no single standard formula works for everyone.  Equal parts of each:

*Echinacea–immune tonic

*Cimicifuga racemose (black cohosh) –anti-inflammatory    

*Harpagophytum procumbens (devil’s claw)–anti-inflammatory

*Glycyrrhiza glabra (licorice)–adrenal tonic and anti-inflammatory

*Taraxacum officinale (dandelion)–used to treat all liver conditions; aids in toxin removal

*Apium graveolens (celery)–removes acid wastes  

My Take:  Take note. Herbs and clean eating habits are a winning formula for success. If you have chronic pain… this might help.

When Losing Means Winning for Chronic Pain and Fibromyalgia Sufferers

A high percentage of the patients I consult who present with chronic back and neck pain, Fibromyalgia and Fatigue are moderately overweight.

It would be beneficial if they lost a few pounds so that their body can reach its full potential.

Here’s a good reason to lose weight from the American Heart Association:

Losing weight is one of the best things you can do to fight cardiovascular disease.  Being overweight affects the lining of your arteries, making them more prone to collect plaque from cholesterol. 

Losing weight–especially belly fat, which is linked to hardening of the arteries-helps raise HDL “good” cholesterol and reduce LDL “bad” cholesterol. 

Aim to keep your body mass index (BMI), an indicator of body fat, under 25.  American Heart Association

My Take:  When you’re over-weight, it’s tougher to exercise, stretch and have the energy to motivate and focus on what you need to do. If you want to eventually feel better… include “weight-loss” on your to-do-list… and start now.

What Should I Eat? Meal Guidelines For The Fibromyalgia and Chronic Pain Sufferer

When it comes to healing the body from disease, as fast as humanly possible, choosing the right foods helps because the body needs plenty of fuel… good fuel… not junk.

I found a great article from Donald Hayes, DC, that outlines specific guidelines for meals that might excel the healing process.

Here’s an excerpt:

Whole-food regular meals should consist of lean protein (meat or vegetarian) plus salad and/or vegetables. 

Guidelines in terms of content:

5-7 ounces of cooked, lean meat, such as chicken, turkey, fish, beef, pork, lamb or shellfish; or meatless options like eggs and garden burgers. 

For complex carbohydrates, select three 1/2 cup servings of vegetables; such as cucumber, celery, spinach, mushrooms, tomatoes, broccoli or peppers.   

My Take:  Eat most of your meals at home. Avoid going out to eat. George Foreman grills are the best way to cook your meat… because it automatically drains the greese.

The Best Nutritional Supplements for Fibromyalgia, Chronic Fatigue and Chronic Pain

Supplements are part of my treatment plan and are just as important as exercise and proper diet.  I don’t carry any specific brand of supplements in my office… but a good nutrition store can help guide you to choose the best products.

I found a great guide to supplements from Chronic Fatigue & Fibromyalgia, Burton Goldberg, 1998, that you might want to print and carry with you to the nutrition store. 

This article lists specific vitamins and minerals that are essential for YOU… whether you suffer from chronic pain or you’re just trying to maintain a heathy lifestyle. 

This is excellent… take a look:

A general nutritional support program is frequently needed to help build up immune function and digestive effeciency, which may have become severely compromised after months or years of chronic candidiasis, according to Dr. Leon Chaitow. 

Specific supplementation can be helpful in reversing nutritional deficiencies and rebuilding weakened immune function. 

Recommended supplements include:

*Individual B vitamins (increase antibody response and are used in nearly every body activity)

*Vitamin C (stimulates adrenaline and is essential to immune processes)

*Vitamin E (the lack of which depresses immune response)

*Vitamin A (builds resistance to infection and increases immune response)

*Beta carotene (a vitamin A precursor which increases T cells)

*Antioxidants, such as selenium, calcium, and zinc (immuneboosters useful in combating candidiasis)

*Chromium, magnesium, and adrenal glandular extracts (stimulate adrenal function)

*Probiotic supplements (repopulate the intestines with “friendly” bacteria and correct and imbalance of flora created by the Candida overgrowth)

*Essential fatty acids (such as evening primrose oil) may be considered as well

As routine supplementation for treatment of candidiasis, James Braly, M.D., of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, offers the following regimen:

*Vitamin C (8-10g daily)

*Vitamin E (one 400-IU capsule daily)

*Evening primrose oil (six to eight capsules daily)

*Max EPA  (six capsules daily)

*Pantothenic acid (250 mg daily) 

*Taurine (500-1,000 mg daily)

*Zinc chelate (25-50 mg daily)

*Goldenseal root extract with no less than 5% hydrastine (250 mg twice a day)

*Lactobacillus acidophilus (one dry teaspoon, three times daily; if allergic to milk, use nonlactose acidophilus)

Dr. Braly also recommends supplementation of hydrochloric acid (HCI).  He notes that the aging process, alcohol abuse, food allergies, and nutrient deficiencies create a lack of HCI in the stomach, which prevents food from being digested and permits Candida overgrowth. 

Such supplementation, he says, helps restore the proper balance of intestinal flora.  Dr. Braly recommends one capsule of HCI and pepsin (a digestive acid in the stomach) at the start of meals, increasing cautiously to two to four capsules with each meal if needed.  Chronic Fatigue & Fibromyalgia, Burton Goldberg, 1998.

My Take:  When you purchase a supplement, make sure the company has been around for many years… if not decades.

Ascorbic Acid / Vitamin C = Most Powerful Antioxidant = BEST Vitamin for Fibromyalgia, Chronic Pain and Fatigue!

2817700202I’ve been treating chronic pain, Fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome for many years here at South Forsyth Chiropractic in the Alpharetta-Cumming area.  Vitamin C is my #1 recommendation for supplements. 

I came across an excellent article from Chronic Fatige & Fibromyalgia, Burton Goldberg, 1998, about why Vitamin C is the best and how important it is for YOU… whether you have chronic pain or not.

Here’s an excerpt:

There is now solid evidence that vitamin C, one of the primary antioxidants, is essential for optimal functioning of the immune system. 

It is vital to the health of white blood cells and their production of antibodies, as well as the manufacture of interferon which acts as an antiviral.  

Vitamin C also reduces pain and inflammation.  It is also vital to the adrenal glands which are located above the kidneys.  

Thus, Vitamin C supplementation offers both immune and adrenal support which are two critical components in any program to reverse Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS).

In CFS, the mitochondria (the energy factories of cells) are damaged by several or all of the factors associated with the disorder–viruses, bacterial infection, Candida overgrowth, allergies, and chemical sensitivities.   

According to Robert F. Cathcart, M.D., of Los Altos, CA, ” The damaged mitochondria become the major source of free radicals.”  Further, mitochondria normally refuel vitamin C in its scavenging of free radicals, replacing the electrons vitamin C gives up in the process. 

Therefore, massive doses of vitamin C are useful to both bolster the immune system and to provide an ongoing supply for free radical destruction in the face of the mitochondria’s inability to refuel the vitamin.  

Michael Murray, N.D., recommends 500-9,000 mg a day of vitamin C in divided doses.   The foods highest in vitamin C are not citrus fruits, as generally thought, although they do have significant amounts.   Ester C or esterified vitamin C is a combination of several forms of vitamin C.  It is more quickly absorbed by the body and less seems to be eliminated in the urine as compared to standard vitamin C.  Non-acidic, it is also less likely to cause gastrointestinal distress.  Chronic Fatige & Fibromyalgia, Burton Goldberg, 1998 

My  Take:  I recommend only one form of Vitamin C (ascorbic acid)… and that is to buy Vitamin C in it’s natural (power form) state. In fact, you can go directly to www.Nutribiotic.com and order ascorbic acid from their website because it is hard to find.  Usually, stores only carry Vitamin C tablets or crystals at best.

If you buy Vitamin C in “powder form”… you can easily dissolve it in water and drink it daily.  WOW… you’ll immediately feel the benefit if you do this.  It’s true, it’ll help your arthritic joints (which all chronic pain and Fibro sufferers have)… and it’ll shied you against virial attacks as well. 

In the powder form… one (flat) teaspoon = 5,000 mg. I don’t recommend taking more than a half a teaspoon because it’ll make you gassy.

Fibromyalgia Case Study: These Treatments and Supplements Significantly Helped…

Tender_points_fibromyalgiaI’ve been treating chronic pain and Fibromyalgia for the past 17 years here at South Forsyth Chiropractic in the Alpharetta-Cumming area with great success. 

I have to treat each chronic pain and Fibromyalgia case individually because some cases are mild and some are severe. 

Some cases respond after just a few treatments and some take quite a while.  I found a great case study from Chronic Fatigue & Fibromyalgia, Burton Goldberg, 1998… about a specific protocol for treating the Fibromyalgia patient.  This doctor spells it out in this case study below.

Although this patient in this case study was  treated over an entire year, some cases respond in just a few treatments.  Either way, the key is to try new things… different things… because otherwise, you’ll always get the same result.

Here’s the case study:

Ellen, 54, suffered from chronic low back pain, muscle soreness, general achiness, fatigue, and depression.  She endured years of clinical testing and various drug treatments without getting a diagnosis or relief of her symptoms.  Frustrated by her lack of progress with conventional doctors, Ellen sought help from Mary Osen, D.C., a chiropractor based in Huntington, New York. 

Dr. Olsen identified Ellen’s condition as fibromyalgia by testing the 18 trigger points associated with that disorder.  Eleven of these points must be sore to the touch to qualify as fibromyalgia, according to the conventional medical definition. 

In Ellen’s case, 16 of the sites were tender.  Dr. Olsen prescribed a three-part treatment program for Ellen. 

First, she used acupressure on Ellen’s trigger points, applying pressure in eight-second intervals and repeating the treatment three times at each site.  The trigger points in fibromyalgia are actually muscles in spasm and those near the spine often pull it out of alignment.   

Dr. Olsen administers acupressure to massage the trigger point, chiropractic to realign the spine, and applied kinesiology to prevent the trigger point from injuring the spine again. 

Ellen saw Dr. Olsen three times a week until her spine began to respond to treatment, and monthly thereafter. 

Second, Dr. Olsen prescribed vitamin supplements specifically tailored to fibromyalgia.   This included vitamin B1 (25 mg), vitamin B6 (75 mg), manganese (2.5 mg), and malic acid (300 mg) two to eight times daily as needed. 

Third, Ellen began a moderate exercise program, performing a 10-15 minute stretching routine five days a week and walking for 20 minutes three times weekly.  The exercise would help raise her serotonin and, in turn, reduce fatigue. 

After one year of treatment, Ellen reported that her low back pain was gone, her muscle aches had subsided, and her energy level had increased considerably.  

Later she began exercising more, her mood increased and she no longer suffers from depression. 

My take:  The treatments outlined in this case study is perfect… even for some of the severe cases of chronic pain and Fibromyalgia.  If you can find a chiropractor who can duplicate this treatment plan… you should do great and respond quickly.

The Benefit of Food Sensitivity (IgG) Blood Testing For Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue

300px-Cheese_platterI’ve been treating chronic pain, chronic fatigue and Fibromyalgia for the past 17 years here at South Forsyth Chiropractic in the Alpharetta-Cumming area Food Sensitivity Blood Testing has always been part of my recommended action plan.

I found a great article from Chronic Fatigue, Fibromyalgia & Environmental Illness, Burton Goldberg, 1998; that explains the importance of this testing.

Here’s an excerpt:

Most allergy testing only measures the presence of IgE (immunoglobulin E antibodies), while most food allergies are dealt with in the body by the IgG (immunoglobulin G) antibodies. 

The igG ELISA (enzyme-linked immunoabsorbent assay) test offers new hope for food allergy sufferers.  It is currently the only commercially available test of its kind of delayed food allergies.

“We know that one of the fundamental causes behind food allergies is the penetration of undigested or partially digested food from the digestive tract into the bloodstream,” explains James Braly, M.D., medical director of Immuno Laboratories in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. 

“With the IgG Elisa test, we can measure the actual presence of specific foods and their specific IgG antibodies in the blood to precisely determine which foods a person is allergic to.”

Convenient and automated, the IgG ELISA test involves computer analysis of a blood sample for the presence of IgG antibodies against over 100 foods.

My Take:  The food sensitivity IgG blood test has always been a powerful diagnostic tool for my tough Fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue, ADD, headache, migraine and sinusitis cases.  I have the blood kits at my office and I refer my patients to the lab down the street.  The lab draws the blood and ships it to the main lab in Mass. where they run the “scores”. In return, I recieve a nice booklet with the patient’s results including what foods to avoid. 

The good news… whatever food you must avoid, they only recommended that you avoid that food for just a couple of months… so it’s not a big change in your eating habits. 

Hint: It’s usually your favorite food (ie: milk, peanut butter, cheese, chicken, etc.) that shows as a positive score.

Pain relief takes time and if you’re overwight, there are many other complications that come along.

Read what Ramzi Cotran, former Chairman of Pathology, Brigham and Women’s Hospital has to say:

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Fibromyalgia and Environmental Illness: Three Related Epidemics

100px-Question_mark_svgI’ve been treating chronic pain and Fibromyalgia for the past 17 years here at South Forsyth Chiropractic in the Alpharetta-Cumming area.  When a new patient consults with me, they often are discouraged, confussed and overwhelmed with all the literature about their condition.  Often times, they might see several doctors and get different diagnoses.

This might happen because different diagnoses, diseases and conditions often overlap with simular symptoms.

I found a great article titled, Chronic Fatigue, Fibromyalgia & Environmental Illness, Burton Goldberg, 1998 and this article best describes why and how these three diagnoses inter-relate with each other.

Here’s an excerpt:

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) is an umbrella term for a multiple symptom disorder characterized most commonly by the sudden onset of extreme, debilitating fatigue, pain in the muscles and joints, headaches, and poor concentration.  

The fatigue is not alleviated by rest and results in a substantial reduction in previous levels of daily activity.  CFS is often cyclical, with periods of relative health followed by debilitation. 

Other symptoms include depression, anxiety, digestive disorders, memory loss, allergies, recurring infections, and low-grade fever.  According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control, CFS predominantly affects white women, 25-45 years old. 

Fibromyalgia is a multiple-symptom syndrome primarily involving widespread muscle pain (myalgia) which can be debilitating in its severity.  The pain seems to be caused by the tightening and tickening of the myofascia, the thin film of tissue which holds the muscle together. Typical tender sites include the neck, upper back, rib cage, hips and knees. 

Other symptoms include general fatigue and stiffness, insomnia and sleeping disorders, anxiety, depression, mood swings, allergies, carpal tunnel syndrome, headaches, the sense of  “ hurting all over,” tender skin, numbness, irritable bowel symptoms, dizziness, and exercise intolerance. 

Post-traumatic fibromyalgia is believed to develop after a fall, whiplash, or back strain, whereas primary fibromyalgia has an uncertain origin.  The majority of fibromyalgia sufferers are women, between the ages of 34 and 56.

Environmental Illness is a multiple symptom, debilitating, chronic disorder involving prolonged, heightened, and often incapacitating allergies or sensitivities to numerous common substances found in one’s environment.

Symptoms may include headaches, fatigue, muscle pain and/or weakness, coughing or wheezing, asthma, weight loss, infections, and emotional fluctuations, depression, and irritability. 

This illness is sometimes referred to as “20th century disease” because patients become allergic to and functionally incompatible with many products and substances found in the modern world, such as car exhaust, synthetic carpets, plywood and other building materials, cleaning agents, office machines, and plastics, among others. 

My Take:  Obviously, there is not a “magic treatment” for any one of these three diagnoses.  It is best to break the disease down into elements and treat each problem, one at a time.  Don’t get “hung-up” on the diagnosis and get discouraged… just approach it a lttle at a time… and find the right doctor who will take the time to treat you holistically.

Factors That Might Cause Chronic Fatigue

Illu_adrenal_glandI’ve been treating chronic fatigue and Fibromyalgia for the past 17 years here at South Forsyth Chiropractic in the Alpharetta-Cumming area.  Chronic fatigue is a complicated diagnosis and often the patient is confused as to how to treat it because different doctors have different approaches.

I found an excellent article from Chronic Fatigue, Fibromyalgia & Environmental Illness, Burton Goldberg, 1998; that shows what can cause this miserable condition and why it’s important to take your time and properally diagnosis it.

Here’s an excerpt:

Fatigue can result from a variety of conditions other than chronic fatigue syndrome, according to Leon Chaitow, N.D., D.O. 

These include:

*Adrenal insufficiency caused by excessive stress and/or the overuse of stimulants (tea, coffee, chocolate, cola, alcohol, tobacco, drugs).

*Anemia (low levels of iron or vitamin B12 in the blod result in anemia; a blood test can verify this diagnosis).

*Candidiasis (often misdiagnosed as CFS in women).

*Cardiovascular caused (if breathlessness and /or chest pain on exertion accompanies fatigue, the heart may be involved).

*Chronic ill-health (many chronic diseases have fatigue as a symptom).

*Depression.

*Diabetes.

*Headaches.

*Hypoglycemia (low blood sugar).

*Obesity.

*Premenstrual syndrome (the connection will be obvious if fatigue occurs at the same time in the monthly cycle).

*Sleep disturbance or inadequate sleep.

*Stress.

You may note that a number of the causes listed are also symptoms of chronic fatigue syndrome. 

This highlights the circularity of symptoms and illness.  Depression is both a symptom and a cause of fatigue, as are headaches, candidiasis, PMS, poor stress-coping skills, and sleep disorders. 

The presence of these factors can produce a downward spiral of illness and it becomes difficult to tell which came first, the fatigue or the other exhibited symptoms. 

My Take:  This article reports that chronic fatigue might be caused by many factors/conditions… and not just one.  Therefore, you might need to hire more than one doctor to treat and correct chronic fatigue.

In my approach… I break down the “umbrella diagnosis” of fatigue or Fibromyalgia into smaller, more precise diagnoses… like degenerative disc disease at L4/L5 level, weakness in the right hamstring, pinched nerve at L4/L5 level/etc.

This way you can approach the “health condition” by treatment different causes of the same symptom. Referring the patient out to other specialists is also important in patient management (ie:obesity, diabetes or cardiovascular problems).

Chronic Pain-Fibromyalgia Diet: Most Vegetables and Fruits Have ‘Unacceptable’ Levels of Pesticides

peasI’ve been treating chronic pain and Fibromyalgia for the past 17 years here at South Forsyth Chiropractic in the Alpharetta-Cumming area.  I always consult with my patients on the BEST diet options… what to eat and what to avoid.

I found a great article from the Annual Report of the Pesticide Residues Committee, 2008 about the levels of pesticides in certain foods. This is powerful information for all chronic pain and Fibromyalgia sufferers because if you can avoid toxins through the food you eat… you’ll respond quicker to treatment and detoxification programs.

Here’s an excerpt:

According to the European Pesticide Residues Committee, apples, peas, and grapes are sometimes covered in crop spray above the maximum levels allowed under European Union law. 

The findings come from tests of more than 4,000 samples of food and drink.  The levels of pesticides varied considerable, with imported fruit and vegetables tending to have higher levels.  14% of beans and 20% of yams all had pesticides above the allowed level. 

My Take:  Try to only consume fruit and vege’s directly from the grocery store that you have to “peel” to eat (bananas, corn, melons, onions, etc)… and all the other s that you “just bite into” (apples, peaches, grapes, etc)… try to buy organic.

Chronic Pain/Fibromyalgia Diet: Eat More of This and Fewer of These…

beansI’ve been treating Fibromyalgia for the past 17 years here at South Forsyth Chiropractic in the Alpharetta-Cumming area and diet is always a big area of concern.

I found a great article from WebMD.com about the good and bad carbohydrates.  I recommend reading this especially if you suffer from chronic pain. 

Check it out:

Carbohydrates are important for energy, but some carbohydrates do your body more good than others. 

GOOD: Whole grains–such as brown rice, whole-wheat pasta and beans have more fiber and raise sugar levels less.  They lower the risk of both diabetes and high cholesterol. 

BAD: Other carbs, like those found in white bread, white potatoes, white rice and pastries quickly boost blood sugar and may increase the risk of developing type 2 diabetes. 

My Take:  I always say to “stay away from the WHITE stuff”… like white milk, bread, sugar, flour. etc.  A well balanced diet is essential for all Fibromyalgia, chronic pain and fatigue sufferers.

Healthy Diet Choices For Fibromyalgia, Fatigue and Chronic Pain Sufferers

250px-PbnjmpegmanI’ve been treating Fibromyalgia for the past 17 years here at South Forsyth Chiropractic in the Alpharetta-Cumming area and proper diet is an important issue that is discussed in consultation.

Most of my patients seem to know the basics, but we must always continue to learn more and more. 

There are a lot of great articles written to help parents choose good foods… while their raising their kids.  A lot can be learned from these articles as they also pertain to us (adults) and especially when we are fighting chronic pain and fatigue.

Parents often combine nutrient-deficient white bread with something equally as unhealthy:  peanut butter (most brands contain hydrogenated oil) and jelly (often contains processed sugar), processed meats (most are filled with chemicals) and cheeses (are often processed instead of the real thing.) 

A more healthy choice includes:  whole-grain bread, natural almond butter and unsweetened jelly, baked or roasted meats and sliced vegetables (cucumbers, red peppers, etc.)

My Take:  Everything we put into our mouth can potentially benefit us or harm us over time.  And when your in pain and/or fighting a disease… your body requires even more nutrient-loaded food… NOT nutrient-deficient, chemical based, processed junk. Just common sense to me.

Fibromyalgia Diet: The Link Between Poor Digestive Function and Musculoskeletal Pain

My Take:  The gut is also known as the “second brain” and poor digestive function might cause sinus problems, headaches and fatigue.  Now… musculoskeletal pain too!  Wow… no wonder my best success stories are those that take their diet seriously.

    Weight Gain… Not Good For Fibromyalgia! The Current Bad Economy Could Make You Fat!

    Forsyth County, Alpharetta-Cumming Chiropractor and Fibromyalgia Doctor Comments:

    fastfood1I’ve been treating Fibromyalgia for the past 17 years here at South Forsyth Chiropractic in the Alpharetta-Cumming area and as a doctor it is my job to encourage my patients to lose weight if needed.

    Although everyone is tring to save money and use coupons for food… it is not a good idea to consistantly eat out at fast food or ”comfort food” restruants.  Here’s an article that explains why:

    On January 9, 2009, Reuters reported that Americans may start to reduce the amount of money they spend on food. One might think this would lead to weight loss. 

    On the contrary, experts think this will lead to weight gain. And they point to numerous studies that link obesity and unhealthy eating habits to low income. They surmise as money gets tough, people will cut out more expensive foods such as fresh fruits and vegetables in favor of foods high in saturated fats and sugars.

    Adam Drewnowski, the Director of the Nutrition Sciences Program at the University of Washington in Seattle, had this quote in the Reuters article, “In Seattle we have found that there are fivefold differences in obesity rates depending on the zip code — the low-income zip codes have a much higher proportion of obese people.”

    The article also stated that “studies in California suggested that a 10 percent rise in poverty translates into about a 6 percent increase in obesity among adults.”

    Some evidence of all this is already manifesting. McDonald’s, with its high fat and calorie “Dollar Menu”, is still doing well. Third quarter profits were actually better than average. Whole Foods (which sells organic, natural and gourmet foods) has seen profits drop with the economy.

    What the Reuters article did not mention was exercise. It would be interesting to know if a worsening of the economy translates to people exercising less.

    Gym memberships are thought of as a luxury and many people quit exercising when stress increases, even though exercise is one of the first things you should do when stressed out. Exercise is a great stress reliever – not to mention all the other health benefits.

    The combination of eating cheaper “junk” food and lack of exercise may not only be a prescription for weight gain – it can be deadly. Eating correctly and exercising should be the LAST things you cut out of your budget.

    My Take:  Plan your meals out in advance and eat in as a family more often.  It’ll be rewarding for you, your family and your health.
